Alsace-Moselle Memorial in Schirmeck
The Alsace-Moselle memorial is a museum recounting the history of Alsace and Moselle from 1870 to the period after the war, with a specific focus on the time after Second World war (1939-1945). With this description, it might seem tedious, but the Museum is really well-done and the history of Alsace-Moselle is quite singular: did you know that the inhabitants of Alsace and Moselle changed nationality four times between 1870 and 1945? If you want to better understand the history and culture of this region, the visit of the Alsace-Moselle memorial is a must-do, even if you are not usually a big fan of history.
The museum is organized in a very lively manner: information panels, photographs, films, soundtracks, lights, staging of the rooms… You’ll really dive into the history, it’s very lively and you will learn a lot! Beyond history, this knowledge of the past of the region is an astounding perspective on Alsatian culture and its specificities.
There is a free audioguide, comprising interesting information: I really recommend you to take it. There are also guided tours for groups over 20 people (or at fixed hours in summer). There are actually often groups (schools, students,…) and it might really well be possible to follow their visit. It’s what I did and it was worth it: the guide was absolutely enthralling! Plan about 2 hours to complete your visit of the Alsace-Moselle Memorial, as there are many things to see.
- Very interesting perspective of the history of Alsace and Moselle
- Well-done museography with a very lively museum
- Free and interesting audioguide
- Partner of Pass Alsace
I liked a little less
- There are sometimes too many lighting effects, making it hard to read some panels
